Australians to attend Mwawi Kumwenda’s wedding

Over 30 guests are expected to attend netballer Mwawi Kumwenda’s wedding at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on September 24.

Kumwenda will tie the knot with Wanangwa Mbwana at St. Columba CCAP in the commercial capital before hosting guests to a reception at the hospitality facility.

“We have sent invitations around and we are expecting many guests. We will basically have family and friends but over 30 Australians are flying in for the wedding. These are my Melbourne Vixens [Australia] teammates and some families,” she said.

On Sunday, the couple had a shower ceremony at Mame Motel, Mzimba Boma, where local friends and relatives presented gifts and best wishes ahead of the big day.

Kumwenda said she was thankful for the support from various high-profile women across the country.

“We had an amazing event which was graced by the wife to Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V [Nkomo]. We are very thankful to the royal family and all stakeholders for the support. We also had a gift from the wife to the country’s vice president.

“We do not take such support for granted. The love that people from all walks of life showed us was just amazing. They came in their numbers and celebrated with us. They made us feel special. This is an event we will never forget,” she said.

Kumwenda said celebrations for the wedding continue today with her sister Hlupi organising a hen party for her at Area 43 in Lilongwe.

Preparations for the wedding compelled Kumwenda to miss Africa’s Netball World Cup qualifiers in Cape Town, South Africa, last month.

Malawi made it to the finals, which are set for the South African legislative capital next year, after finishing second to the hosts.
