Award winners qualify for regional accolades

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Administration Manager, Henry Mereka, has said inaugural National Sport Awards’ winners have qualified for Region Five awards set for South Africa in May.

MNCS held the first-ever awards at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe on Friday.

“The regional awards were introduced two years ago to recognise and reward outstanding athletes, teams and officials in this part of Africa [Southern Africa]. We did not take part in the two previous awards because we did not qualify. To send nominees, as a country, you are supposed to hold national sport awards.

“We have just done that and we will submit the winners as nominees for the regional awards. Hopefully, one or two individuals might end up winning an award. We hope that this will encourage our athletes, officials and teams to strive for better results during competitions,” he said.

Griffin Saenda Junior, who won the Coach of the Year Award, said it was encouraging to learn that the recipients of the awards stand a chance to win regional accolades.

“This will inspire us to strive for gold whether at local or international event,” he said.
