Azam Tigers overpower Lions

Azam Tigers’ quest for top four finished in the TNM Super League continued with a 2-1 victory over hosts Red Lions at Zomba Community Centre on Saturday.

Bright Munthali put Tiger s ahead in the seventh minute when he took advantage of a defensive mix-up to beat Lions goalkeeper Jacob Kaunda at the near post.

Lions responded five minutes later when Benesi Kaisi rose high to head home a Steve Ziba free kick that had eluded goalkeeper Nenani Juwaya.

The rest of the half saw both teams pressing forward to get another goal.

Tigers scored the decisive goal a minute after resumption through Mike Chitani.

Lions pressed forward in search for an equaliser but Tigers still dominated possession and they held on for an important victory.

Tigers coach, Gerald Phiri, said his charges followed instructions.

“They could have done better with a better playing surface. The pitch was a bit bumpy but we still managed to collect maximum points,” he said.

Lions coach Pritchard Mwansa said it was a difficult game.

“We hope we will catch up with our colleagues shortly,” he said.
