‘Baba’ stands out at Dr Tawanda’s show

Zimbabwean musician Tawanda Benson, better known as Dr Tawanda, finally performed at Robin’s Park in Blantyre on Friday night when he shared the stage with local artists.

Dr Tawanda showed energy on stage and interacted with the audience throughout his live act backed by Mizu Band.

The show attracted a fair audience and saw reggae group Black Missionaries closing the chapter in the early hours of Saturday.

However, it was Dr Tawanda’s popular gospel song ‘Baba,’ which had the audience singing along and dancing.

His other songs were completely strange as the audience kept it low but he killed it when he performed ‘Baba,’ which he later also translated to Chichewa.

The artist made sure he engaged the audience during his performance and there were moments when he invited people to sing the song ‘Baba,’ and the winner received a copy of his DVD.

He also conducted a competition towards the end of his performance involving women which was more like a beauty contest and he gave the winner an expensive necklace.

Earlier on, Dr Tawanda also collaborated in a song with Nepman, who he revealed he wants to stitch up a song with him and also joined Anthony Makondetsa in one of the songs where he played freestyle.

But much as Dr Tawanda showed potential during his performance, others felt the combination was not perfect as he could have performed with gospel artists.

“I think the pairing with Black Missionaries and other artists was not perfect. He seems to be more gospel so I wish if this was an afternoon show and then sharing the stage with gospel artists,” said Kondwani Mazizi.

Dr Tawanda said he was over the moon with the support he received from Malawians.

“I just don’t know what to say but I am humbled with the support I have received. I never knew Malawians love my song ‘Baba,’ this much,” he said.

Before he started performing, he greeted the audience in Chichewa screaming ‘Muli bwanji Malawi!’

Mizu Band led by vocalists JJ and Eunice Mhango took people down memory lane performing cover songs originally done by other artists, including Paul Symon.

The other performances on the show which started on Friday through to Saturday included Toza Matafale, Khozie Masimbe and Moda Fumulani.

The Zimbabwean artist, who is in the country courtesy of Mizu Entertainment, was yesterday performing at Lilongwe Golf Club.
