Zimbabwean musician and producer Tawanda Benson better known as Dr Tawanda is in the country ahead of two concerts at Robin’s Park in Blantyre tomorrow night and Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday.
Dr Tawanda, will be performing in the country for the first time courtesy of Mizu Entertainment.
The musician, who is based in Botswana, is famed for the hit ‘Baba,’ which is currently enjoying airplay in some of the radio stations and other entertainment places.
Dr Tawanda said he is delighted to perform in the country and he is looking forward to sharing the stage with some of the country’s top artists.
“I am exci ted to be in Malawi, it’s my first time but I am already feeling at home. Malawians are friendly people and so I am ready to entertain them just to appreciate the warmth they have accorded me,” said the singer, before showing his dance moves.
Dr Tawanda who wil l perform live backed by Mizu Band also went on to sing a few of his other songs but he could not avoid the hit ‘Baba.’
“My song ‘Baba,’ is all over but let me tell Malawians that ‘Baba,’ is not the only song, I have lots of songs they will enjoy. So I urge them not miss these two concerts in Blantyre and Lilongwe,” said the singer.
As a producer, he has worked with several musicians in Botswana.
“I am looking forward to doing collaborations with musicians here, artists like Nepman of the ‘Nalelo,’ fame but we will see. I am also happy to share the stage with reggae group Black Missionaries, Lulu and Mizu Band which will back me up. We have had intensive training,” he said.
Dr Tawanda described his music as unique in touch and standard adding that it has its own taste and level of quality.
“I do dancehall, house and traditional but being a musician and producer I am flexible so I am not that restricted, I do all genres of music,” he said.
The artist, who has stayed in Botswana for close to seven years, started his career in 2000 and so far he has five albums.
Among others, Dr Tawanda has worked and produced hits for Botswana’s artists Vee, Slizer, who once performed at the Blantyre Arts Festival (BAF), Franco, Maghebula and DJ Colastraw.
Apart from ‘Baba,’ his other songs are ‘Tevera Jesu,’ ‘Zorai Butter,’ ‘Paita Cash,’ and ‘Dr Tawanda in Action.’
Miz u Entertaiment Manager Emmanuel Maliro said they are on a mission of helping uplifting talent in the country and that one of the things is to bring award winning musicians.
“Dr Tawanda is a top musician, he has worked with several musicians and on top of that he is a top producer. His song ‘Baba,’ is doing well and the best we thought of doing was to bring him here so that he interacts with local artists among others so that they learn from him his success story,” said Maliro.
He added that Dr Tawanda’s performance in the country is part of cultural exchange.
