Babatunde opens up on his future

Nigerian forward Babatunde Adepoju has said he will respect Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) verdict regarding his possible transfer from Be Forward Wanderers to Silver Strikers.

Fam Appeals Committee held a virtual hearing over the weekend in its bid to resolve the transfer wrangle.

Babatunde said he would either join Silver or stay at Wanderers depending on the outcome.

“All I need is to play football. I have no problem playing for Silver because this is why I signed for the club. I also don’t have any problem staying at Wanderers after a great season last year. So I am open to anything. All I need is peace of mind and play football,” he said.

Similarly, Wanderers General Secretary Victor Maunde said they will respect the decision which the appeals committee will make.

“We are a team which is open and we respect laws of the game. Therefore we will respect Fam’s determination of the case. We made our submission over the weekend. In a case that he [Babatunde] stays we will have about five strong and proven forwards and we will be much stronger than before,” he said.

Silver Chief Executive Officer, Thokozani Chimbali, said they wait for the judgement to comment.

Babatunde has been at the centre of transfer controversy after Silver decided against completing his deal when the former Masters Security player had already signed a contract.

Silver’s cheque to Wanderers was referred back to the Bankers as they moved swiftly to stop the transfer from being completed.

This forced Wanderers to seek Fam’s intervention over the matter. In an earlier verdict, Fam advised Silver to pay K8 million as compensation for Babatunde’s transfer.

Following Fam’s verdict, Silver then appealed the case while asking Wanderers to pay K15 million for the transfer of forward late Tony Chitsulo who left the Bankers for Nomads in 2013.

Chitsulo was valued at K1.5 million but the Nomads did not pay. Silver have thus charged a compound interest rate to reclaim their money.
