Baby dumped in forest
An unknown woman dumped a three-week old baby who was found in a forest at Kaning’ina in Mzuzu on Sunday.
Police have since launched a manhunt in order to trace its mother.
Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police Martin Bwanali said in a statement Tuesday that the baby was found by Ringo Simwaka who was on his way to his plot.
According to Bwanali, Simwaka who works as a court marshall at the Mzuzu High Court reported the matter to police after shouting in vain for the attention of its mother and guardians.
“Police then went to the scene in company of the reporter [Simwaka] and still found the baby on its own. It was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital for care and safety,” Bwanali writes in the statement.
As investigations to trace the alleged dumper are still underway, police are calling on members of the general public to report any woman known to have had a baby recently but suddenly cannot be seen with it.
In the recent years reports have been rife of commercial sex workers in the city of Mzuzu who fall pregnant from the trade and later resort to dumping the babies after giving birth.
