Balaka DHO shot in the arm

Following an appeal for food assistance Balaka District Hospital made a couple of months ago, Youthnet and Counseling Organisation (Yoneco) responded by donating various food items to ease the situation.

Due to erratic funding, Balaka District Hospital appealed for assistance for food items to help feed patients at the hospital.

Speaking on Friday when she received various food stuffs on behalf of the hospital, Balaka District nursing officer, Mercy Chinkhunda, said the hospital operations have been crippled by shortage of funding.

“The funding was inadequate to cater for food for patients, drugs and fuel so we shared our concerns with the district executive committee where civil society organisations such as Yoneco sit hence their timely response on the same,” Chinkhunda said.

Yoneco programme manager for radio and advocacy, Charles Banda, said the donation was in response to the DHO’s appeal for assistance.

“We realised that the hospital serves women and children whom we primarily target in our projects and we did allocate about K250 000 back in January to procure maize and beans from Admarc but due to the scarcity of the grain, then the cooperation could not sell us any in bulk due to the rationing it was doing,” Banda said.
