Ballot papers for the May 21 Tripartite Elections will start trickling in from Monday, Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alfandika, announced Wednesday.
In a statement, Alfandika says the first batch, comprising Local Government and parliamentary election ballot papers, will arrive at Kamuzu International Airport at 12:20pm on Monday.
The next batch is expected in Malawi on Tuesday at 12:20pm, which will have the rest of parliamentary and presidential elections ballot papers.
“Upon receipt, the ballot papers will be kept in a secure warehouse at the airport until 16th May 2019, when the commission will be dispatching them to the councils,” Alfandika says.
“Political parties are, therefore, invited to send their monitors to witness the receipt and warehousing process of the ballot papers. The commission will provide special accreditation for such monitors and they will be the only ones authorised to be present during this exercise.”Advertisement
The elections will involve candidates for ward councillor seats while the rest will vie for 193 parliamentary positions and one position of president.
The elections will attract 6.8 million voters, whereas the 2014 elections involved 7.5 million voters.
