Baroka duo focus on PSL survival

Malawi national football team attackers Gerald Phiri jnr and Richard Mbulu are now focussing on the survival of their team-Baroka-in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

This follows the teams’ exit from the Nedbank Cup after losing 3-0 in a semifinal clash to Bloemfontein Celtic which compatriot John Maduka is coaching.

Phiri, who played 46 minutes during the Nedbank defeat, said they were determined to bounce back when facing AmaZulu on Saturday.

“We are still recovering from the loss. I am sure by Friday every player will be ready for the league match. Our morale is down but that’s part of the game. It was not easy to play after being idle for five months. We will play against AmaZulu and we know what we want,” Phiri said.

Baroka are on position 13 in the 16-member league having collected 23 points from 23 matches while AmaZulu are 15th with similar points and matches.

The restart of the Absa Premiership will also see Malawian defender Limbikani Mzava’s side Highlands Park play Sundowns on Friday.

On Saturday, Malawi’s duo Denis Chembezi and Khuda Muyaba will be in action when their side Polokwane City take on Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Stadium.

Both Chembezi and Muyaba are also not safe in the PSL as Polokwane are also fighting against relegation. The side in on position 14 with 23 points as well.

Veteran midfielder Robert Ng’ambi’s Black Leopards are anchoring the table with 20 points.
