The Northern Zone Basketball League (Nozobal) on Saturday held a memorial service in honour of three students and an official who died in a road accident last November.
Two students from Mzuzu University (Mzuni) and one from The Polytechnic died when a Mzuni coaster they were travelling in plunged into Nadzipulu River in Dedza.
The vehicle had 39 passengers on board while in transit from a National Bank of Malawi-sponsored MO626 Basketball Tournament at Malawi University of Science and Technology in Thyolo District.
Nozobal Chairperson, Young Jere, said the league considered it important to hold the memorial before the start of any basketball tournament in the region.
“Since that accident happened, we are yet to have regional finals in the Northern Region. We wanted to do it in December, but we had to respect the souls of our brother and sisters first,” he said.
Apart from prayers, Mzuzu Select also played against the males who were involved in the accident, while their female counterparts played against Magic Spurs.
Regional Sports Development Officer for the Northern Region, Georgina Msowoya, said the memorial was good for the development of the sport.
One of the students who survived the crash, Peacemaker Nkhoma from Mzuzu Technical College said, although memories of the accident are still fresh, it was commendable to have the tribute.
