There was colour and pomp at Pirates Casino in Lilongwe on Friday night as basketball clubs, Central Knights and Lady Dynamites, rewarded their best achievers for the 2017 season.

Dressed in blue jeans, white shirts and blue neck ties, Knights players looked smart and elegant —ready for the big occasion.

Dynamites ladies were also attractive and awe-inspiring on the night. The awards were organised by the Knights family which has three basketball teams, namely Knights, Dynamites and Spartans, which finished as champions in Central Zone Basketball League’s Division B.

Speaking during the event, Knights Team Manager, Barlet Mafuleka, said the awards were introduced to motivate the players.

“The main idea is to see Malawi’s basketball teams compete on an equal footing with other teams on the continent. It is pleasing that we are making steady progress and, very soon, we will be at par with other teams in Africa,” Mafuleka said.

Knights Captain, Lucky Makonokaya, said the awards would motivate them to work extra harder.

“It is a motivation to the players and I hope everybody will work hard to win in the forthcoming season. We are looking forward to a better performance,” Makonokaya said.

Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) General Secretary, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, hailed the clubs for rewarding their players.

“We would like to congratulate the Knights family for organising such a brilliant and colorful event. It is inspiring to the players and the entire basketball fraternity. As Basmal, we are encouraging all teams to borrow a leaf from the Knights in motivating their players,” Ng’ong’ola said.

During the event, the three clubs’ players went away with awards for their outstanding performance last season. Knights have been organising the ceremony since 2010.
