Malawi women’s and men’s national basketball teams started their campaign for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games gold medals on an impressive note at the Griffin Saenda Sports Complex in Lilongwe on Saturday.

The Malawi women’s side defeated Zimbabwe 78-31 whereas the men’s team beat South Africa 78-44.

However, the men’s team was in action last night as we went to press. The hosts were up against favourites Angola.

One of the coaches for Malawi, Robert Munthali, said they will not get complacent.

“Playing at home does not guarantee us victory. We really need to work hard to win the desirable medal for our country. Our players are youthful and, by the time most of them will reach 20 years of age, then they will be unplayable. The spirit which is there between players and officials is just awesome,” he said.

In a related development, one of Malawi’s tennis players Atupele Kadam’manja lost her first match to Zambia’s Natasha Chewe at Malawi Institute of Management.
