Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has hailed NBA Africa for constructing a basketball court at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.

The court will help the youth at Dzaleka to take part in the sport.

Dzaleka-based basketball team, Dream, is affiliated to Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal).

Speaking during the unveiling of the court which NBA Africa has constructed through CorpsAfrica, Basmal General Secretary, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, said the facility would ease challenges which the association faces.

“Basketball is not a cheap sport as it requires a lot of investment. We, as a nation, lack proper infrastructure; so, when we have partners like NBA Africa, it is really refreshing. I hope that this is the beginning. We expect a lot of basketball courts to be constructed in the country,” Ng’ong’ola said.

NBA Africa Director [Basketball Operations], Franck Traore, who was in the country, said Malawi had the potential to be a top basketball nation.

“I have seen a lot of interest from the youth in Malawi that they want to play basketball but they do not have enough infrastructures. We are looking at the possibility of investing more resources in the sport on the continent,” Traore, who is originally from Senegal, said.

Dream Team Coach, Ben Tshibwabwa, said the court would motivate the youth to take part in the sport.

“It was difficult for us to conduct drills but, with the court, everyone wants to play. It is a motivation for the youth at the camp and we are really excited,” he said.

NBA Africa also unveiled a court in Traditional Authority Mzikubola in Mzimba in 2017.
