The battle for places in the round of 16 of the 2022 FDH Bank Cup reaches a boiling point this afternoon with potentially interesting ties.
The pick of the day is the match involving holders Silver Strikers and Dedza Dynamos at Dedza Stadium.
In all honesty, this is the fixture that promises fireworks.
Dynamos have turned their venue into a fortress, having won two matches in the TNM Super League against Civil Service United 2-1 and Ekwendeni Hammers 3-2 this season.
But Dynamos face a real test this afternoon as Silver interim coach Leo Mpulula would be hoping for a good start.
Surely, Silver being holders of the cup, they would likely come flat out to protect their money.
However, Dynamos are a tough nut to crack.
The two sides shared the spoils in the TNM Super League first round match following a 1-1 draw at Silver Stadium.
Sounding calm and composed, Dan Dzinkambani believes they have a good squad capable of knocking out the holders.
“The players know the importance of the match. Obviously, the stakes are high and we believe we can do it,” Dzinkambani said.
Dynamos have assembled a good squad comprising talented players including goal poacher Promise Kamwendo, Clement Nyondo and Charles Chipala.
Honestly, Silver defence has to be alert to contain the three players.
During midweek, Silver assistant coach Macdonald Yobe said his boys were not intimidated with Dynamos’ impressive home record.
“We know it will not be easy to beat them but our mission is to defend the cup,” Yobe said.
The Bankers have experienced players including Chawanagwa Kaonga, Blessings Tembo, Stain Davie and Taonga Chimodzi.
In other matches this afternoon, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers will face Kamuzu Barracks Reserves at Kamuzu Stadium.
Airbone Rangers will meet Ekwendeni Hammers at Chitowe Stadium whereas Kamuzu Barracks host MDF Marine at Civo Stadium. Changalume Barracks will meet Mafco at Balaka Stadium.
Three teams, namely Extreme FC, Kawinga and Kadona Stars are already in the round of 16 after winning their respective matches last week.
Extreme, who knocked out The Boys from Blantyre 3-1 at Civo Stadium, will face Kadona in the round of 16, who defeated Immigration 5-4 on post-match penalties.
Kawinga booted out Chintheche following a 1-0 victory and they await the winner between Chitipa United and TN Stars.
Just like in the inaugural edition, FDH Bank dressed all the regional league teams that qualified for the national phase. They also got K500,000 and two match balls.
The winners of the 2022 FDH Bank Cup dubbed Pachema will get K25 million.
