Be Forward Wanderers claim 1st round honours

Be Forward Wanderers Sunday claimed K1 million prize money for finishing as the TNM Super League’s first-round winners after a goalless draw against Silver Strikers before a huge crowd at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Wanderers finished with 35 points from 15 games, two points above second-placed Silver.

Nyasa Big Bullets, who defeated Azam Tigers 2-0 on Saturday, have finished on position three with 28 points.

From the first whistle, Silver came flat out looking for victory but failed to score.

Wanderers sat too deep in their own half and allowed Silver to attack wave after wave.

The Nomads lived dangerously for the better part of the first-half but contained their opponents with goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa making good saves.

Striker Binwell Katinji missed one of the best chances when he fired over the bar inside the penalty box. Mathews Sibale also had a goal disallowed for an offside in first-half.

Without some key players such as Yamikani Chester, Alfred Manyozo junior, Stanley Sanudi, Lucky Malata and Jabulani Linje, the Nomads struggled to match Silver as Blessings Tembo and Thuso Paipi were a constant threat.

But in the second-half, Wanderers displayed a much improved performance with Rafiq Namwera, Ernest Tambe and Joseph Kamwendo exchanging good passes.

Jafali Chande had a golden opportunity to put Wanderers ahead when he received an intelligent pass from Isaac Kaliati but goalkeeper Brighton Munthali saved the situation.

The last time Wanderers finished the first-round on top was in 2006 and they went on to win the championship.

In a post-match reaction, Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, said: “We missed some chances but that is part of the game. It is good to finish on top in the first-round.”

His Silver counterpart, Lovemore Fazili, was contented with their unbeaten run in the first-round.
