Temper flared Tuesday at Kamuzu Stadium when Be Forward Wanderers fans ganged up to manhandle goalkeeper Bester Phiri, accusing him of fixing their TNM Super League match, which they lost 2-3 to Mafco on Sunday.
The atmosphere was highly-charged as the fans kept hurling insults at the ‘keeper, who was preparing for in the day’s training session.
The fans even attempted to jump over the perimeter fence to take Phiri out of the stadium, thanks to a few others who restrained the overzealous ones.
It was the arrival of Wanderers Supporters Committee Chairperson, Yamikani Kaliyapa, that pacified the irate fans.
“We are all unhappy with Bester’s performance on Sunday. He let us down big time. But the best way to deal with him is not to beat him up. What effect will that have on the other players? ” Kaliyapa reasoned.
“Firing players is not our responsibility. Let us leave that in the hands of our executive committee. We can only propose to them that they should fire him.”
The club’s Chairperson, George Chamangwana, came into the stadium, but he did not address the fans. Wanderers have since appointed Eddington Ng’onamo as Head Coach and re-deployed Jack Chamangwana as Technical Director.
