Be Forward Wanderers have said they will reluctantly honour tomorrow’s Carlsberg Cup semi-final against Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium, insisting that the game should have been shifted to a neutral ground.
Wanderers General Secretary, Mike Butao, Thursday said they were shocked that Football Association of Malawi (Fam) did not respond to the Nomads’ letter, requesting the venue change.
He added they deserved to play on a neutral venue as is the case with Sunday’s other semi-final between Nyasa Big Bullets and Red Lions at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
“We are even shocked that the head of Fam’s Competitions Sub-Committee [Jabar Alide] said our request would incite violence when we did not address our letter to the supporters but Fam,” Butao said.
“Another issue is about the ban of Alfred Manyozo. He has been banned for four games for an incident that happened on the pitch [during the quarter-final against Blue Eagles at Civo Stadium]. The referee felt the incident deserved just a yellow card. By banning him, does Fam mean that the referee did not make a competent decision?”
Alide, earlier, said Wanderers were creating issues out of nothing as the venue decision was informed by the cup’s rules and regulations.
Manyozo’s ban cost him a call up to Malawi National Football Team which is in camp ahead of a six-nation invitational tournament scheduled to start on August 31 in Morocco.
Meanwhile, the Nomads have suffered a blow as attacking midfielder Jafali Chande has been ruled out of the match against Moyale due to a yellow card suspension.
Wanderers Team Manager, Stevie Madeira, confirmed Chande’s suspension, saying: “Missing players such as Chande is not good news but there is nothing we can do. I hope others will perform the way Chande would have.”
Moyale Team Manager, Gerald Kanje, yesterday said they were happy that Fam had put its foot down on the venue issue.
“We are happy that the venue has not changed. I think Wanderers were trying to play psychological games but we are not affected,” Kanje said.
