Malawi National Beach Soccer Team Coach Willy Kumilambe is in Durban, South Africa, attending a coaching course.

The coaching course, which started Tuesday, is expected to end on Thursday.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the coaching course is important for the game of beach soccer in Malawi.

“Beach Soccer has shown a lot of potential, looking at what we achieved this year. The coach needs to be well equipped. We noted some shortfalls during the Afcon finals in Mozambique; so, we believe the course will improve his coaching skills,” Zakazaka said.

Cosafa, together with Fifa, has organised the coaching course.

Interestingly, Schirinzi was in charge of Uganda during the Afcon finals in Mozambique.

In an interview from Durban Sunday, Kumilambe said the coaching course was an eye opener.

“This is a good opportunity for me and Malawi. I will learn a lot of things which, if implemented, will help take beach soccer to another level,” Kumilambe said.

Fam has funded his trip to South Africa but Cosafa will be responsible for accommodation, meals and transport while in Durban.

Beach Soccer Association Chairperson Gift Chimbalanga hailed Fam for making it possible for the coach to travel to South Africa.

“At the Afcon finals, we observed some technical deficiencies; so, the course will help us address some of the challenges,” Chimbalanga said.

Malawi finished on position six during the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals held in Vilankulo, Mozambique last month.

During the Afcon finals, Malawi lost 4-2 to hosts Mozambique in the opening match before losing 7-3 to Morocco. In the fifth place play-off match, Malawi lost 4-1 to Uganda on post-match penalties after 6-6 draw after extra time.
