Beach soccer coach names Afcon squad

Malawi National Beach Soccer coach Willy Kumilambe has named a 13-member squad ahead of the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals slated for October 21-28 in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

The squad comprises two goalkeepers, namely Justine Bonongwe and Eddie Jamu, four defenders, four midfielders and three strikers.

The team is expected to depart for Mozambique on Monday.

Kumilambe said the team was going to Mozambique to compete.

“We are not going there to participate but to compete with the best teams in Africa,” Kumilambe said.

Malawi will start their campaign against hosts Mozambique on October 21 before facing Morocco three days later. Nigeria pulled out of the competition.

Two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. Group B comprises holders Senegal, Uganda, Egypt and Madagascar.

Former Malawi Beach Soccer captain Bothwell Saka believes the team can pull a surprise.

“We have talented players. Let other teams underrate Malawi at their own peril,” Saka said.

Malawi will be the only team making maiden appearance at the Beach Soccer Afcon finals.

Below is the full squad: Bonongwe, Jamu, Defenders: Martin Biliati, Arnold Lasiteni, Sandram Saddie and Blessings Likupe.

Midfielders: Isaac Kajamu, Dala Simba, Frank Mwenelupembe and Ganizani Mphande.

Strikers: Obrien Nkhukumba, Watson Frazer Phiri and Charles Ndovie.
