Beach Soccer team off to Afcon finals

Malawi National Beach Soccer Team left yesterday to take part in the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals slated to start on Friday in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

The 29-member delegation left early in the morning by bus via Mwanza.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Committee Member Chimango Munthali is leading the delegation.

The team has been camping in Salima for the past three weeks ahead of the continental showpiece.

Before departure, the team’s coach Willy Kumilambe said his charges were on a serious mission.

“We are going there to compete. We are targeting nothing short of victory,” Kumilambe said.

Malawi will face hosts Mozambique in the opening match of Group A on Friday before facing Morocco on Monday next week.

Nigeria pulled out of the tournament.

Group B comprises holders Senegal, Egypt, Uganda and Madagascar.

Two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.

Finalists will book a ticket to the 2023 Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup.

Former Beach Soccer captain Bothwell Saka urged the team to work extra hard to achieve its mission.

“All eyes will be on us; so, we should show our quality to progress. We need to show that we have good players,” Saka said.

Malawi will be making a maiden appearance at the continental showpiece, having eliminated Tanzania on away goal-rule after 8-8 stalemate on aggregate.

At the 2016 Cosafa Cup, Malawi finished second after losing 9-4 to Madagascar.
