Beach Soccer team Tanzania-bound

The Malawi national beach soccer team has been invited to take part in a four-nation tournament scheduled for December 22- 26 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The tournament involves hosts Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda and Malawi.

Beach Soccer Association of Malawi General Secretary, Davis Sado, confirmed the development and said the team is expected to regroup this weekend under the tutelage of Stereo Gondwe in preparation for the tournament.

“It is another step forward in the development of the game. This will be the second time for the beach soccer team to participate in an international tournament. We first set the standards in Seychelles by finishing as runners-up.

“This time, we want the team to bring a cup as an end-of-the-year gift to Malawi sports lovers. Of course, we will be under pressure to continue doing well but the team is mature enough to prevail in any conditions,” Sado said.

He said the Malawi team has been invited based on its impressive record during the 2015 Cosafa Beach Soccer Tournament in Seychelles.

Sado said the beach soccer association, through Football Association of Malawi, is working on the logistics of the team’s trip to Tanzania.

During the regional tournament, Malawi registered just a single victory over Mauritius (7-3) before losing to hosts Seychelles 4-3.

The team then went on to play in the final against Madagascar where it lost 9-4 to claim silver medals.
