Wednesday was Africa Day. This is the annual commemoration on May 25, 1963 of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to available information in 1991, the OAU established the African Economic Community, and in 2002 the OAU established its own successor, the African Union. However, the name and date of Africa Day has been retained as a celebration of African unity. Africa Day is observed as a public holiday in six African countries, including Ghana and Zambia while in other countries celebrations are held.

MultiChoice Malawi last Friday organised a trip to Kungoni Arts at Mua in Dedza as part of celebrating the day. The African continent is rich in its culture which includes traditional dances as shown in the picture performed by Kungoni Dance Troupe.
