Beggars storm ministry offices
People with disabilities who were recently ordered not to be found in the streets begging, Monday marched to the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare where they presented their grievances.
Minister of Gender Patricia Kaliati heard the people’s concerns which leader of people with disabilities in Lilongwe Urban, Mateyo Fabiano read.
The people faulted government for the decision saying they are currently suffering.
“We depend on people to help us, so that we survive. Since the ban, we have been spending a number of days without eating anything. Some of us have been evicted from our rented houses. We are asking the government to be helping us so that our lives can change,” he said.
Some of the people went to the extent of suggesting to Kaliati that government should be giving them a monthly pay of K50,000 each if they are not allowed in the streets.
Kaliati shot down the proposal, arguing that there is need to find sustainable ways of assisting them.
She said the ban was not for people to stop helping them but they should be using proper procedures.
“We are looking forward to the people who help them to continue helping them following the right protocol. When they are in the streets they are going to meet a lot of hazards which can destroy their lives and moreover, some people use them so we are protecting them from such circumstances,” Kaliati said.
