Bernadettar Kwimbira to attend second VAR course

Malawi’s elite Fifa female assistant referee Bernadettar Kwimbira is set to join a group of 34 female referees in a five-day online Caf Women’s Elite A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) course.

The course is scheduled for October 1-5.

This is not the first time for Kwimbira to attend the course as she underwent a similar exercise in Rabat, Morocco, about seven months ago in preparation for the 2020 African Nations Championship which was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fam Referees Development Officer Maxwell Mtonga said the course will cover various aspects of the game.

“Among other things, the assistant referees will learn about new refereeing concepts, amendments to Laws of the Game, match and video analysis and penalty area incidences.

“This time the course will cover both technical aspects and VAR. The most critical part will be Amendments to Laws of the Game, focusing on handball and offside rules. There has been a lot of talk about the two rules since the laws were amended,” Mtonga said.

He urged female referees in the country to work extra hard if they are to shine on the international stage like Kwimbira.

The Zomba-based refereeing sensation said she was excited with the news.

Kwimbira said the course will help her enhance her expertise in the game.

“I believe in learning and the course will further sharpen my skills as an assistant referee. I want to continue doing well each time I am given a chance so that I continue representing Malawi in big competitions. I expect to be one of the officials in the VAR room one day,” she said.

Kwimbira is one of the top female assistant referees in the world and has officiated at the Women’s Fifa World Cup at both senior and junior levels, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the Olympic Games, among others.
