Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) partnered with 2018 Sports Personality of the Year and Fifa assistant referee Bernard Kwimbira-Nzika in donating various items to patients at Zomba Central Hospital (ZCH) on Saturday.
The charitable event was organised to celebrate the Sports Gala Awards which were introduced last year.
The items, valued at about K1 million, were made to the hospital’s paediatric ward.
MNCS board member, Rodrick Chiwaya, said they decided to celebrate the introduction of the awards with people from the communities.
“The awards will be back again this year and the donation was part of celebrating their introduction together with the communities. This is the first time for the council to engange in such a charity activity. We would like to assure all Malawians that the awards are here to stay and every year we will also be doing some charitable works,” Chiwaya said.
Kwimbira-Nzika contributed K500,000 to the cause and said she was delighted to win the award, hence her decision to celebrate with the sick.
ZCH Senior Nursing Officer, Tawonga Chitaya, thanked MNCS and Kwimbira-Nzika for the donations, saying patients at the referral health facility lack many basic needs.
“Most of our patients come from distant remote areas such as Phalombe and Machinga, so the items will make a big difference in their lives,” Chitaya said.
