Malawi National Football Team striker, Gabadinho Mhango, made a dream start to the 2016 South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League season which kicked off on Tuesday night.

Mhango was voted man of-the match on his debut for Bidvest Wits as they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in Johannesburg.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt was pleased with Mhango who he played on the left wing.

“I played Mhango wide today— it’s not his position but I knew that is where the space was for us,” Hunt told SuperSport Television channel 204 in a post-match interview.

“In the first half, he kept drifting in and I said to him: ‘stay wide, stay wide, you will get the ball and we can hurt them there. That right fullback gets really high and the space is there game in and game out.”

The Flames striker created the opener for Elias Pelembe before Thulani Hlatswayo added the second. Gordinho scored the consolation for Chiefs.

“I thank my team mates for their support. They keep pushing me to work hard in training. This is the start I wanted,” Mhango told the television station.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets striker joined Wits from Golden Arrows where he was on loan after leaving Bloemfontein Celtic last season.

However, Gerald Phiri Jnr was not in Wits’ playing squad amid reports that he might be loaned out again.

In other games involving Malawians in the South African league, Esau Kanyenda’s Polokwane City lost 2-0 to Cape Town City also on Tuesday night
