Bidvets dangle 2-year deal for Papa

Malawi’s up-and-coming midfielder Gerald Phiri Junior could be heading to South Africa to join Bidvets Wits after impressing the Premier Soccer League side during trials.

The club has since offered the former Mighty Be Forward Wanderers player a two-year contract.

Papa, as Phiri is fondly called, only needed three days of his two-week trials before the team’s technical panel stopped him and offered him the deal.

However, the player is yet to decide since he still has a contract with his Zimbabwe club Caps United that expires next year.

Caps coach, Mark Mathe, has already lamented over the loss of the player to the South African club.

“He is a good player, make no mistake about that. If you ask me I will tell you this boy was an asset,” Mathe was quoted by Zimbabwe media.

“But, look, he is going to greener pastures and he only needs to be supported in his endeavours.

“So we are happy for him and we wish him the best in his career.”

Papa was not available for a comment but his father, Phiri Senior, who is also Flames assistant coach, confirmed that his son had passed trials at the South African club.

In a related development, striker Esau Kanyenda has extended his contract with Polokwane City.

Kanyenda’s contract expired in June but coach Kosta Papic recommended that he should stay on.

According to Kickoff.com. the length of his new contract has not been revealed though it is believed to be a one-year deal with an option of another season.

Kanyenda scored four goals during the past season and will now be staying on at the club for his fourth consecutive year having joined City when they were still in the First Division.

The ‘Black Mamba’ has scored 53 goals in South African club football since his time at Jomo Cosmos back in the 2001-02 season prior to his departure for Russia where he spent almost a decade.
