Big Bullets defend extended holiday

Nyasa Big Bullets are the only team yet to regroup ahead of the new season slated to start on February 26.

Bullets and Silver Strikers had a prolonged season after they reached the Airtel Top 8 Cup final.

However, Silver resumed training two weeks ago but Bullets have not recalled the players for the pre-season.

Bullets Team Manager James Chilapondwa defended the decision, saying the players were given an extended holiday to recharge.

“We had a prolonged season and the players had no time to rest. After the Airtel Top 8 Cup final, we did not stop training until December 23; so, we gave the players ample time to rest,” Chilapondwa said.

The TNM Super League is expected to kick off on February 26 which effectively means that Bullets will not have ample time to prepare for the new season.

Additionally, Bullets Coach Kalisto Pasuwa is still in his native country, Zimbabwe, for holiday.

Reports suggest Bullets are waiting for his return to make a decision on the resumption of training.

Pasuwa could not be reached for his comment.

Bullets also had three players with the Flames at Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon. These are midfielder Chimwemwe Idana, goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe and defender Gomezgani Chirwa.

The three players will also likely be given another extended break for being part of the Flames, in which they exited the Afcon in the Round of 16 following the 2-1 loss to Morocco.

Former Flames midfielder Sherry Msuku said Bullets players deserved enough rest.

“I think the technical panel is trying to manage fatigue on the part of the players. They played more games; so, they need ample time to refresh,” Msuku said.

Bullets had a good season after defending the TNM Super League title and winning the Airtel Top 8 Cup for the first time ever.

They also took part in the Caf Champions League but exited in the preliminary round after the 3-2 loss on aggregate to Amazulu of South Africa.
