Big Bullets keep fingers crossed

FACES RACE AGAINST TIME—Chiyenda

Covid-hit Nyasa Big Bullets are keeping their fingers crossed over the fitness level of goalkeeper Rabson Chiyenda ahead of their TNM Super League fixture against Kamuzu Barracks slated for Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Chiyenda has a fractured finger but he has reported for training following goalkeeping crisis that has hit the People’s Team in the wake of Covid-19 cases.

Currently Bullets Reserve side goalkeeper Clever Nkungula has been registered at the main side as a back-up after first-choice goal-minder Ernest Kakhobwe and third-choice Richard Chimbamba tested positive for Covid-19.

As it is, Nkungula will likely man the posts if Chiyenda fails to pass fitness test.

Bullets Chief Executive Officer Escort Chinula said they were monitoring the situation and determined to honour the fixture.

“It is a challenging situation because we are counting on a reserve side goalkeeper. We are working hard to get all our players fit and mentally ready for the game,” he said.

Bullets received encouraging news Wednesday when players Hassan Kajoke and Luke Chima were cleared, having tested negative for Covid-19.

“The two players have since rejoined the squad that is preparing for our TNM Super League match against Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday.

“The other nine players and one staff member, who also tested positive are still in isolation,” a statement on the club’s website reads.

The statement further states that the club will keep the public informed of these developments as they unfold.

“Nyasa Big Bullets implores all our supporters and the wider football fraternity to follow Covid-19 safety measures at all times,” the statement reads.

Bullets suspended training on Monday last week after nine players tested positive for Covid-19.

Following the recovery of Kajoke and Chima, Bullets have Stanley Billiat, Mike Mkwate, Henry Kabichi, Nelson Kangunje, Mac Fallen Ngwira, Richard Chimbamba and Kakhobwe in isolation.
