Big Bullets, Mafco to open Airtel Top 8

Crowd pullers Nyasa Big Bullets and Mafco will clash in the opening match of this year’s Airtel Top 8 at Kamuzu Stadium on November 6.

According to the fixture which Football Association of Malawi (Fam) released Thursday, Mighty Wanderers will host Moyale Barracks the following day at the same venue.

Cup holders Silver Strikers will start their title defence with a showdown against TN Stars at Nankhaka Stadium on November 13 whereas Civil Service United will host Karonga United at Civo Stadium the following day.

The second legs will be played between November 20 and 28, with Moyale hosting Wanderers on November 20.

Mafco will then host Bullets at Chitowe Stadium 24 hours later.

Karonga will host Civo at Karonga Stadium in the second leg before Stars take on Silver in the last quarterfinal match.

Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said all was set for kick-off.

“We expect exciting matches in the competition. This is a winner takes all contest,” Zakazaka said.

Airtel Malawi Marketing Director Thokozani Sande said the sponsors were looking forward to the start of the competition.

“We are excited to roll out the new season of the cup,” Sande said.

Semifinals are expected to be played between December 11 and 12 before the final on December 18.

Silver have dominated the competition, having won in 2017 and 2019.

Blue Eagles lifted the cup in 2018 but are not in this year’s event after finishing the season on position 12 with 32 points.

The champion will pocket K17 million plus a trophy, with the runner-up getting K5 million.

The player-of-the-tournament and the top goal-scorer will receive K500,000 whereas the man-of-the-match in each game will be pocketing K50,000.
