Big Bullets shelve reserve players’ promotion
Nyasa Big Bullets have shelved plans to promote three players from their reserve side into the main team to give them time to mature.
The players are Chimwemwe Idana, Charles Petro and Nixon Nyasulu, who also feature for the Malawi Under-20 national football team.
The three were instrumental in Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves’ dominance of the Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) League Division One where they emerged champions with 94 points after scoring a record 139 goals.
Bullets Chief Executive Officer, Fleetwood Haiya, said the club wants the players to gain experience by playing in the SRFA Premier Division
“They may have excelled in Division One but we want them to graduate from a more competitive league. We cannot just take them straight into the main team from Division One.
They will be better players after excelling in the Premier Division,” Haiya said.
Bullets Reserves Head Coach, Enos Chatama, confirmed the development, saying it was important to avoid rushing the players into the main team.
Chatama said the three need to play in the Premier Division for one season to be ready for competition in the main team.
“We are trying to safeguard the players’ careers. Yes, they are good but they need to meet stiffer opposition. They excelled in Division One which is less competitive. If they do well in the Premier Division, competing in the main team will not be a problem,” he said.
Chatama said his team is ready for life in the Premier Division and will begin preparations mid February after conducting trials for new players at BAT Ground on January 30.
