Veteran musician and legislator Billy Kaunda on Friday finally launched his first book Hills and Valleys and Hymns album at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
Billy, famed for hits such as ‘Agalatiya’, said Sunday he felt loved by the support that people from all walks of life including President Lazarus Chakwera gave him during the launch.
“The presence of people from all walks of life, including ministers, fellow legislators, business captains, academicians and fellow artists, during the launch has taught me lessons. Again, the love shown by President Lazarus Chakwera in buying my book is something I don’t take for granted,” he said.
Billy said Chakwera bought the book at K500,000 through Minister of Information Gospel Kazako who also bought his own copy.
“Fellow legislators supported me a lot by buying a copy and for this I say thank you. I repeat, I felt loved and then the support that fellow artists gave me is huge,” he said.
About the book, Hills and Valleys written by Wonderful Mkhutche, which details Billy’s life from music to politics and family, he said people now have a better understanding of who he is and the life he has gone through.
He then called upon people to document their stories and that they should never shy away from telling their stories.
“It is good to tell our stories, our stories are lessons to others and our stories can help change other people and this is why I am saying life is about hills and valleys,” Billy said.
On distribution of the book, Billy said they were currently talking to different outlets so that it is accessible in all the corners.
“We are talking to Greymatter on this and Maneno for distribution and also filling stations. This is a book which can also help students out there in terms of lessons,” Billy said.
The event also gave a chance to Billy to launch Hymns album.
Having been out of the stage and not holding performances frequently as was the case in the past years, Billy said, with the love people showed him, he will be holding shows.
Billy worked with Lulu at Mathumela Studios in Lilongwe on the hymns album.
The album has 13 songs with three instrumentals.
Some of the songs in the album include ‘Nkwabwino Kukhulupilira’, ‘Ndikonda Mlungu’, ‘Sing’anga Nkulu’, ‘Kwa Inu Yesu Ndilira’, ‘Hossana’, ‘Potuluka M’mudzimo’, ‘Ndidze Pafupipa’, ‘Nauthenga Wa Mbuye’, and ‘Akhristu Limbikani’.
Some of the artists who spiced up the launch include Skeffa Chimoto, Lulu, Faith Mussa and comedy from Winiko and Jakobo.
