Billy Kaunda Jr, son to renowned musician and legislator Billy Kaunda is now a private pilot, having achieved this feat recently.
Billy Jr, who is also a musician and has played the keyboard and guitar for his father during performances as well as Lulu’s Mathumela Band, said Wednesday he was excited to have made his parents proud.
“It is always amazing to know your parents are genuinely happy with the results you bring as a child to their home. It’s not easy but I finally got it,” he said.
He said a private pilot is the one who flies for leisure and that he has now moved from being a student pilot to private pilot having attained new bars.
“So one bar is for a student pilot, two bars are for a private pilot and three bars are for commercial pilot and then you move to four bars,” Billy Jr said.
He said he started training in 2018 at Madiba Bay School of Flight in South Africa.
“I started in 2018 but due to other challenges including Covid, I only managed to get it this year. I have always wanted this and my role model is Captain Lawman Lipipa,” Billy Jr said.
His father, who is also a former Cabinet minister and recently published a book Hills and Valleys telling his musical story, has since congratulated his son for the achievement.
“I am happy for him. He worked so hard and this is what he has wanted to do,” he said.
On music, Billy Jr said he is passionate about it and that he will continue to pursue it as well.
“Of course, music is more like my leisure thing and, so, I don’t think it would be hard for me to accommodate it together with flying,” the keyboardist said.
Billy Jr has released two songs this year – ‘Mphete’ whose concept derives from wedding vows and ‘Under Pressure.’
A fourth born in the family, Billy Jr went to Mount Sinai and Kalibu Academy schools.
