Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Florence Msekandiana Thursday convicted Bingu International Stadium Assistant Accountant Wongani Ng’oma of the charge of theft by public servant.
He has since been remanded at Maula Prison in Lilongwe, where he will be until sentencing day on March 23.
State Prosecutor Cecilia Zangazanga told the court that, in December 2020, Ng’oma, who was a Ministry of Youth employee, stole cash amounting to K5 million belonging to the Malawi Government.
The money was meant for Enlightened Christian Gathering leader Shepherd Bushiri’s 2020/21 crossover ceremony.
Although Ng’oma paid back the money prosecutors used it as their exhibit when he was charged with theft by public servant.
The arrest followed stadium management’s failure to pay back the money, which Bushiri paid as advance pay for the ceremony.
