The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 Friday said the new treatment centre at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) is ready to provide admissions to patients of Covid-19.

Co-chairpersons of the taskforce, John Phuka and Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, as well as Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu, inspected rooms that have been furnished for the cause.

The stadium is expected to house 300 beds but authorities said currently, there are 230 beds.

Mlusu said the extension will alleviate the space capacity challenges that Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and Bwaila Hospital were having.

“We have 230 beds now, we believe that this extension we have done is going to reduce challenges that we were having. I have been impressed with the set, very professional and clean,” he said.

He then implored patients not to hesitate seeking medical support at the facility.

Chiponda, who is also Minister of Health, hailed stakeholders that have rendered support towards the project.

“It’s a great relief to us because at KCH alone, we have 70 patients and we were over-stretched in terms of bed capacity. I must commend all who have provided their support to the project,” she said.

The field hospital is being run by both KCH and Bwaila Hospital management.
