A notice from Chief Secretary to the Government, Lloyd Muhara, released Thursday, says the function is expected to start at 10am.

“His Excellency will preside over the commissioning of a statue of the late Ngwazi professor Bingu wa Mutharika, the former president of the Republic of Malawi, followed by a memorial service, at Parliament Buildings,” the statement reads.

The project to construct the statue is under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, which was also behind Kamuzu Statue as well as Kamuzu Mausoleum phase one projects.

Recently, Information Minister, Henry Mussa, said it was justifiable to mount the statue around Parliament precinct s , arguing it is a symbol of honour to Mutharika for the infrastructure development the country gained because of his decision to shift Malawi’s diplomatic ties from Taiwan to People’s Republic of China in 2007.

The government hired renowned South African sculptor Jean Doyle for the project.
