SHINING STAR—Kaonga

Malawian striker Chawanangwa Kaonga registered his name on the scoresheet as Zanaco lost 2-1 to Green Eagles FC in MTZ Faz League at Sunset Stadium on Saturday.

Kaonga opened the scoring after 25 minutes in the first half.

However, Eagles staged a second half comeback, thanks to a brace from Amity Shamende.

This was Kaonga’s second goal for the team since he joined the club in January, having also scored against Lumwana Radiants last week.

The former Silver Strikers forward is enjoying game time at the Zambian club.

In an interview Sunday, Kaonga said he has adapted well to the demands of Zambian football.

“I am working hard to help the team. The league is very competitive here,” he said.

Kaonga signed a one-year deal with Zanaco.

He had a good season last year, scoring 12 goals for Silver in the TNM Super League.

Sports analyst Sherry Msuku was confident that Kaonga would score more goals in Zambia.

“He has speed and is a very good player. If he is given a chance to play, he will do well for Zanaco,’’ he said.

The on-and-off Flames striker returned to Silver after completing his six-month Fifa ban last year for breach of contract when he signed for TS Sporting despite having a contract with Mozambican side Costa do Sol.

While in Mozambique, he helped Costa win the Mocambola League when he scored 10 goals.

At Sporting, he scored five goals and was linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

Zanaco are on position 11 in the league with 33 points from 26 matches.

Meanwhile, Flames midfielder Lloyd Njaliwa scored for Costa do Sol in the 4-0 win over Maputo Sports in a pre-season tournament.

Costa do Sol have four Malawian players namely Richard Mbulu, Yamikani Chester, Chikoti Chirwa and Njaliwa. All the players have made an instant impact.

Elsewhere, Francisco Madinga was in action for Jwaneng Galaxy in Botswana as they beat Prisons XI 2-0 on Saturday.
