Giants First Choice Tigresses and Kukoma Diamonds have been excused from Rainbow Paints Blantyre and Districts Netball League (BDNL) matches after contributing several players to the Malawi National Netball Team.
The team is scheduled to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, from July 28 to August 8.
BDNL General Secretary Annie Hanjahanja said the two teams have not played any league game since their June 4 meeting in a league opener.
“We had intended to give games to the two teams but our mother body [Netball Association of Malawi] said we should not do so as the clubs’ national team players could sustain injuries in such matches.
“So we are not allocating games to Tigresses and Diamonds because we don’t want to jeopardise the national team’s preparations,” Hanjahanja said.
She said they will work out a plan to ensure that both Tigresses and Diamonds honour their first round fixtures when they return from England.
“It is our desire to finish the season by December but, at this rate, we are in an awkward position. We are planning to give both teams mid-week games when the Queens return,” Hanjahanja said.
Prison Sisters are currently topping the table with 12 points, having won six games and lost once.
Imosys lie second with the same number of points from six games while Shizaella Queens are third with eight points from six games.
Defending champions Tigresses started with a 34- 55 loss to Diamonds and are anchoring the 12-member table without a point from one match.
