Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets legends Albert “Kika” Mpinganjira and Andrew “Aluki” Chikhosi have shared their thoughts on the forth coming Blantyre derby saying it has lost its spark.

The Nomads face the Peoples’ Team this Saturday in what will be the last meeting for the sworn rivals this season in the TNM Super League.

The two sides settled for a 1-1 draw when they met in the first round.

Former Wanderers dribbling wizard, Mpinganjira, said lack of fighting spirit amongst players in both camps is making the Blantyre derby lose its appeal.

He said in those days, both Wanderers and Bullets players used to make names in the derby.

He also said the standards of football have gone down compared to when he played.

He said the poor standards of play in the derbies have also affected the general turnout of the supporters since they want value for money.

“When we talk of the Blantyre derby, we are talking about classic football. This is the time for players to make names. During our time we would motivate one another quite a lot. The derby was like an international match.

“Our rivals would take the lead but we kept fighting until we also scored. But today’s players lack self belief. You just do not see the hunger in them,” Mpinganjira remarked.

Chikhosi blamed administrators from both camps, saying their lack of seriousness is eroding the flavor of the Blantyre derby.

Said Chikhosi: “When Bullets were facing Wanderers during our time, you could not see any player from both camps just walking around anyhow. We would go to Mangochi on a Wednesday for camping ahead of a game to be played on a Saturday.Wanderers would also go to places like Chikwawa or Phalombe for camping.”

Chikhosi said playing well during the derby meant an automatic call-up to the national team.

The two sides have won a trophy each this season with Bullets claiming the Presidential Cup while Wanderers boast of the Carlsberg Cup
