Super League of Malawi (Sulom) is expected to reschedule next week’s Blantyre derby between Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets to accommodate FDH Bank Cup fixture.
The two giants are expected to clash in the second round of the TNM Super League on August 6, the same day Bullets are supposed to host Moyale Barracks in the FDH Bank Cup round of 16 at Kamuzu Stadium.
Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda doubted if the Blantyre derby will proceed as Bullets will be in action on the same day in a cup game.
“The likelihood of having the Blantyre derby on August 6 is minimal,” he said.
Banda pleaded with stakeholders to appreciate the situation arguing that Sulom does not change fixture without valid reasons.
“Before the start of the season, teams were also reminded that the fixture can be rescheduled due to cup and national team commitments. Further to that, fixtures can be rescheduled due to other unforeseen circumstances.
“For national team you know in advance about the fixture but in cup games, you can’t know which team will proceed to reach the next stage of the competition as a result you change the fixture depending on the results,” Banda said.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Communications and Competitions Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said they were discussing with Sulom to avoid clash of fixtures.
“We are in touch with Sulom. We are moving on the same page. This is why some league games and cup games are on,” he said.
Currently, the FDH Bank Cup which started at regional level has reached the round 16.
