Blantyre motorist granted bail

FLASHBACK—Khomba in hospital

High Court Judge Vikochi Chima has released on bail Clifford Khomba, who was arrested on suspicion that he ran over traffic police officers in Blantyre.

A court order we have seen, dated June 1 2022, indicates that the judge ordered the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to release Khomba unless they have another lawful reason, not related to the incident, to keep him in custody.

His wife, Diana Maganga, confirmed the development but said they were yet to get a release order from the police.

Coincidentally, Khomba was discharged from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, where he was being treated after being allegedly beaten by police officers who were keeping him in custody.

“We have been waiting for a release order from the police from yesterday (Wednesday) but it never came. We were just told to leave the hospital and come home and that someone else would be making follow-ups,” she said.

Maganga claimed that her husband was still not able to walk or talk properly due to injuries he sustained.

The Malawi Human Rights Commission indicated recently that it had taken up the matter to investigate circumstances surrounding Khomba’s injury and his claim that he was assaulted by police officers.

MHRC Executive Secretary Habiba Osman said their Southern Region team, based in Blantyre, was handling the matter.

MPS officials were not readily available for a comment.
