Blantyre netball derby today
BY ARKANGEL TEMBO, MANA:
Who said derbies are restricted to football?
With the commercial city experiencing drought in sports, today’s game between Kukoma Diamonds and Thunder Queens could be a Blantyre netball derby worth feasting eyes on.
The Rainbow Paints Blantyre and Districts Netball League league leaders, Diamonds, will battle it out with their rivals Thunder at Blantyre Youth Centre.
Thunder are second on the log table and today’s game can have a bearing on the championship race.
Diamonds Captain, Caroline Ngwira, has since vowed to suffocate their opponents, considering the way they have trained.
“We are leaving no stone unturned because any victory against Thunder means getting closer to the title. We are very prepared and every player is eager to play this game,” she said.
Diamonds are beaming with confidence following the availability of experienced players such as Jessica Sanudi, Alinafe Kamwala, Bridget Chalera and Shiela Dimba.
Thunder Queens Captain, Joana Kachilika, has sent a warning signal to the champions.
She said Thunder want to become the first team to defeat Diamonds this season.
“There is no room for complacency. We respect Diamonds, but we will take them head on. For us to be champions, we have to beat our rivals,” she said.
Thunder boast of skillful players such as Thandiwe Galeta, Kachilika and Martha Dambo.
In another potentially exciting fixture, Machinjiri Sisters take on Tigresses at the same venue this afternoon.
Southern Region Netball League General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja, has said first-round games will wind up this weekend.
She urged netball lovers to witness the clash of the giants.
