As the main commemorations for Kamuzu Day were being held in Lilongwe, memorial prayers for late Hastings Kamuzu Banda were also taking place at St.Michael’s and All Angels CCAP Church in Blantyre.
Banda, Malawi’s founding president, was a member of the church and the prayers were held at a church where he personally used to congregate.
He was a member and a Church Elder of St Michaels and All Angels CCAP Church.
In his sermon, the church’s moderator Chaplain Stevens said Banda had dedicated himself to the work of God.
“In 1976 when the walls of this church were collapsing, Dr. Banda donated a lot of money to have the church reinforced,” he said.
Malawi Congress Party’s Director of Campaign Moses Kunkuyu, who is also Presidential Advisor on Chiefs and Rural Affairs, Moses Kunkuyu said Banda laid a strong foundation for the country.
“It is Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda who laid the foundation for the country’s education, food security and infrastructure development. You will find out that today; even roads which were build 40 years ago during During Dr. Banda’s time are in much better shape than roads built 10 years ago,” he said.
Kamuzu Banda ruled Malawi for 30 years, before relinquishing power under multiparty democracy following elections on May 17 1994.
