Blantyre Sports Club defend Captain’s Putter Golf Trophy
Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Sunday defended the Captain’s Putter Golf Trophy during a highly-contested competition held at Country Club Limbe (CCL).
Played every January on rotational basis, the Captain’s Putter is an inter club competition between CCL and BSC’s golfers.
The competition was introduced 20 years ago.
BSC Captain, Sam Mwale, said the club lived up to its billing after defending the trophy.
Mwale said 60 golfers participated, forming 30 teams, 15 from each club.
He said the game ended square at 7.5 points apiece.
“This meant that the trophy went back to BSC. Next year, the tournament will be played at Blantyre Sports Club. As defending champions, it was up to Country Club Limbe to grab the trophy from us, but they failed. This is a game of pride and therefore, we can confidently say BSC remains the cream of golf between the two clubs,” Mwale said.
To clinch the trophy, Limbe was supposed to win more games than Blantyre.
“We knew that Country Club Limbe would come with guns blazing and our strategy was to force a draw knowing that we were playing in their territory. We will finish them off next year when they come to Blantyre,” he said.
The tournament was played on a four-better-ball match-play format, stroking off the lowest handicap on hole by hole basis.
