Blantyre Synod to discuss same sex marriages

The Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) is this August expected to hold elections for three positions of Moderator, Deputy Moderator and Deputy General Secretary.

According to the Synod’s General Secretary, Alex Maulana, apart from the elections, the Synod will also discuss same sex marriages and homosexuality.

“The meeting is a platform for us to discuss policies our church is built on. It offers an opportunity or chance to have the constitution changed if need be. Apart from that, we are also conducting elections for three positions.

“These [abortion and same sex marriages] are the issues that people would want to hear the stand of the church. We can only make our stand in meetings such as these,” he said.

Talking about the elections, Maulana said the people that will be replaced are Reverend Robson Chinkwezule, Blantyre Synod Moderator, Reverend Edna Navaya and Deputy General Secretary Reverend Moyenda Kanjerwa.

This was disclosed on Sunday, during a farewell ceremony of Reverend Raul Jason Makata who has served in the Blantyre synod for 44 years.

On the farewell cerebration, Blantyre City Presbytery Clerk, Baxton Maulidi, said young ministers should emulate the workmanship of the retired reverend.

Maulidi said Makata who served as a Chaplain in the Malawi Defence Force was meek and selfless.

“Reverend Makata has a record that is very admirable; he is leaving while serving the presbytery and perhaps the synod with a clean record. The church did not have any issues with him about his conduct and services. I think young ministers have to emulate the spirit,” he said.

Until his retirement, Reverend Makata, was serving at Mpemba CCAP since 2013.

Session Clerk for the church, Dennis Wachepa, said since 2013 the congregation has grown tremendously.

“We used to have one service in Chichewa before the coming in of Rev Makata. We now have two services, one in Chichewa and the other in English. Through his services, the church is currently being refurbished to carter for the growth and to look modern as well,” he said.
