Blantyre Water Board (BWB) will tomorrow shut down its main pumping stations, Walkers Ferry and Chileka for 12 hours in order to carry out maintenance works on its main pipeline.
The pipeline, which transfers water between Walkers Ferry and Chileka, will be under maintenance from 6am to 6pm.
In a statement released to the public yesterday, BWB says that the maintenance works are necessary to improve the efficiency of water supply within the city. The board further advises customers to store enough water and use it sparingly during the time the maintenance works are in progress.
The twin pipeline is the main line that transfers water from Walkers Ferry to Blantyre water supply area at a distance of 40km.
BWB upgraded its pumping machinery at Walkers Ferry and Chileka stations two years ago to improve production capacity from 78,000m3 to 96,000m3.
The board is undertaking a multi-billion kwacha water project in Mulanje District, where about 20,000m3 are expected to be pumped to Blantyre City.
