Blue Eagles aim to extend good run against Red Lions
After defeating TNM Super League champions Big Bullets 3-0 last Sunday, Blue Eagles want to continue their good run with another victory over Red Lions Wednesday at Kamuzu Stadium.
Eagles consolidated their fourth position following Sunday’s victory as they increased their points’ tally to 40 points from 24 matches.
Eagles’ team manager, Gabriel Chirwa, said they aim to win their remaining four matches and finish the season as runners-up.
“It is very important to finish on a good position because there are better rewards. The players know that they will earn more money if they finish second therefore they are all geared to win all the remaining matches starting with Red Lions,” he said.
On whether complacency could lead to their downfall, Chirwa said: “We have put the Bullets result behind us. This is a whole new match. We have lost five games to smaller teams this season because of complacency. We don’t want that to happen again.”
Eagles will miss Gilbert Chirwa through suspension after he collected an extra yellow card against Bullets in the match he was also on target.
John Banda is expected to lead the attack from midfield with Schumacher Kuwali likely to start upfront alongside John Malidadi Jnr.
Lions are also enjoying a good run, and they are coming from a 3-0 thumping of Airborne Rangers last Saturday.
The soldiers are on position eight with 35 points from 24 matches.
Lions head coach, Prichard Mwansa, said they want to finish in the top six to automatically qualify for the Standard Bank Knockout Cup next season.
“We have faced several challenges this season, including the suspension of eight players, but I am still pleased with the way we have coped. We have to beat Blue Eagles to move further up the table to increase our chances of breaking into the top six,” he said.
Lions are currently a point behind sixth-placed Be Forward Wanderers with a game in hand.
The league’s top scorer, Innocent Bokosi, will likely lead Lions’ attack with Kumbukani Mwambene and Steve Ziba playing a supporting role.
