Unpredictable Blue Eagles will be hoping to reclaim top spot when they host Dwangwa United in the only TNM Super League second round match today.
With 42 points from 23 games and lying on fourth position on the log table, Eagles can ascend to the top with a victory in today’s encounter.
If they win, Eagles will have 45 points, a point above Mafco, who lead the standings with 44 points going into today’s game.
In the first round, Eagles earned a hard fought 0-1 victory over Dwangwa at Chitowe Stadium.
Eagles’ Assistant Coach, Wilson Chidati, yesterday said his side was treading carefully ahead of the game.
“It will be like a cup final. Our preparations have gone well and the players are mentally ready,” Chidati said.
Eagles have received a boost following the return of injury-phone striker, John Malidadi Jnr, and midfielder, Philip Masiye.
But influential midfielder, Gilbert Chirwa, is still out due to an injury.
The fixture against Dwangwa will not be easy as the rookies are fighting for Super League survival.
Stuck on position 12 with 22 points from 24 games, Dwangwa have refused to throw in the towel in the survival battle.
Dwangwa’s gaffer, MacDonald Mtetemera, has assembled a good squad blended with young and experienced players.
“We anticipate a tough match but we are going there to collect maximum points,”Mtetemera said on Saturday.
Dwangwa will rely on set-piece expert, Jack Chiona, sniper Frazer Menyani and stylish midfielder, Cuthbert Sineta, whereas Eagles will put their hopes on Maxwell Salambula, Stuart Mbunge, Steve Chagoma and Gregory Nachipo.
Eagles started the campaign on a high having finished as first round winners, but things changed suddenly in the second round when they went five consecutive games without a victory.
For the past three seasons, Eagles have been clueless in the second round.
Some soccer commentators say Eagles have a lean squad that cannot withstand the heat throughout the season.
Since the introduction of the Super League in 1986, Eagles have never won the league. Super League will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
