FISD Challenge Cup champions, Blue Eagles, will today parade the trophy in the streets of Lilongwe.

The parade is scheduled to start from the National Police Headquarters in Area 30 and will be spiced up by the Malawi Police Orchestra.

According to a statement from Eagles, there will be a number of activities during the parade.

“Our community policing officers will take advantage of the parade to sensitise the general public on security and safety. Some of our legends are expected to be part of the parade. The parade will reach its crescendo in the evening with a party at the senior officers mess [Area 30]. The objective is to celebrate the team’s success in 2019 and God’s unmerited favours,” reads part of the statement released by Eagles Media Officer, Steve Kumalonje.

The Area 30-based side won the cup for the first time after defeating Kamuzu Barracks (KB) 4-2 on post-match penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time at Civo Stadium last month.

Eagles Captain, Micium Mhone, said 2019 was one of the most exciting years for the Malawi Police Service club.

“We performed well in the 2019 season and we hope there will be more to celebrate about in the 2020 season. Everybody worked hard for us to finish the season with a trophy. We also thank management for supporting us,” Mhone said.

For winning the tournament, Eagles got K20 million plus a trophy whereas KB received K9 million.

Eagles Chairperson, Alexander Ngwala, said the players would share K12 million from the prize money.

“It pleased the Inspector General [Duncan Mwapasa] to direct that the players share 60 per cent of the total prize money. This is our way of motivating them to continue delivering,” Ngwala said.
